Don't bother pointing out to Renee Hill that she's old enough to be the mother of many of her competitors. She'll be the first to tell you she doesn't care. After all, age is just one of the obstacles this Riverside resident has overcome en route to picking up a second-place trophy last month in the Pro-Am Women's Runabout race at the International Jet Sports Boating Association World Finals at Lake "It's fun to go out there with 16-year-olds and give them a run for their money," said Hill, who has accomplished an awful lot on the circuit the past few years despite racing without a sponsor.
She won last month's event despite racing on a fractured ankle. "We've worked our way up," said Hill, who started jet skiing with her husband, Jeff, seven years ago. The couple got a pair of bottom-end Sea-Doo jet skis and began riding around on Lake Havasu. They were the runabout style, which means riders sit on them, rather than stand, as the vehicle flies through the water at 65 to 70 miles per hour. A friend suggested they enter some local races, and Renee and Jeff competed throughout the winter and summer series. Before long, they had joined the IJSBA and began competing in the 800cc novice-class western regionals, racing all over Southern California. Renee won a world championship in that class in 1999 and then moved up to the next level, the pro-am, where she's been racing for the past four years. The first year I said I wanted to finish in the top 10, then I'd work my way up," she said. "This year I wanted first place, but it was quite an honor just to stand up on the podium at this level." Jeff Hill said that if his wife's first-place finish in the 800cc class had come a few years before 1999, back when the sport was peaking in popularity, she might have come away with a lot more. "We might have had two new boats, and a mechanic," he said, but then explained that the sport has been slumping in recent years. "You have a machine that goes 65 mph out of the box, and if you put a 15-year-old kid on that or someone who's not educated, people get hurt." So it's just been Renee and Jeff, traveling around, going to events, racing, having fun, without any sort of corporate sponsorship. The summer IJSBA series culminated at Lake Havasu, where racers from 37 nations competed. Kellie Skelton, a 21-year-old New Zealander, nudged Renee to take first place. "She races for Factory Kawasaki and has a lake in her backyard," said Hill. "I have three children, so I was happy just to be there. It was a great end to four years of hard work." These four years of hard work almost went unrewarded when Hill hurt herself while riding a quad at Lake Havasu in August. She thought she had just sprained an ankle, but then, after a race in Pahrump, Nev., she found out that the ankle was fractured, only seven weeks before the world finals. "I was pretty proud to go from sitting on the couch, or being on crutches or in a wheelchair, to racing so quickly," she said. The next step, Hill said, will be to move away from runabouts and into stand-up competition. "We'll do it all over again," said Hill of the long road from beginner to standing on a podium, being awarded a trophy. "I'll start in the novice class, then work on a national or world title." But isn't she worried about injuring herself again? "Sometimes we say we're done," said Renee Hill. "But we've made a lot of friends and had a lot of fun, so we don't want to give this up."

Chris MacClugage, a Kawasaki factory racer, dominated the 2002 season by winning both the Open and Pro class titles at the IJSBA Offshore National Championships. The race, also known as the Long Beach-2-Catalina, took place on August 24th, and MacClugage finished with a winning time of 1:11:16. Despite losing precious time when he couldn't locate the checkpoint and refueling barge in Catalina, he still finished four minutes ahead of Yamaha pilot Mark Dobson. The defending champion, Polaris pilot Billy Womack, who holds the race record at 1:09:26 and has the most Long Beach-2-Catalina titles to his name, experienced an unexpected breakdown just past the halfway point of the race, thus ending his impressive winning streak.
6/17/2002 0 Comments IJSBA Wraps Up TourThe IJSBA has recently concluded its new national tour with a final event on June 1-2 in Laughlin, Nevada, in conjunction with the Laughlin River Days. Despite the addition of flat water racing, the standings remained relatively unchanged, with Team Kawasaki continuing to dominate the field. The only exception to their stranglehold on the top spots was Yamaha pilot Dustin Farthing. At the end of the tour, National Championships were awarded to Chris MacClugage in Pro Ski, Dustin Motzouris in Pro Runabout 1200, and Alessander Lenzi in Pro Freestyle, with Eric Malone having previously taken the Pro Freeride championship. This was a great finish for the lone remaining factory team in the competition.
After a complete overhaul of the professional tour, Rounds 1 and 2 of the newly revamped Pro Watercraft Tour have now come to an end. The event took place in Ventura, California over the past weekend, and despite the streamlining of the show, the excitement remained as intense as ever.
Team Kawasaki emerged as the big winners, with their lone factory squad still standing strong. Teammates Chris MacClugage, Dustin Motzouris, and Steven Dauliach dominated both the Pro Ski and Pro 1200 Runabout categories in Round 1, with the trio taking the top three spots in Pro Ski, and MacClugage and Motzouris finishing first and second in Runabout. In Round 2, Motzouris took the lead in Pro Ski, followed by MacClugage and Dauliach, while in Runabout, MacClugage and Motzouris once again secured the top two spots. The only riders to break the Kawasaki domination of the top positions were both on Yamahas, with Chris Lawrence and Dustin Farthing taking third place in Runabout for Rounds 1 and 2, respectively. These victories have given Team Kawasaki an unprecedented lead as they head into Rounds 3 and 4. The debut of Pro Freeride also created a lot of buzz as riders took to the surf, with Eric Malone continuing to edge out his rival Alessander Lenzi for the Ski crown, while Jimmy Visser remained unbeatable in Runabout. The tour will continue with Rounds 3 and 4, scheduled for this upcoming weekend in Oceanside, California. 4/14/2002 0 Comments The Modifieds are backGet ready for an exciting announcement from the IJSBA! The 2002 Amateur & Pro-Am Watercross National Championships just got even better with the addition of eight new classes. And who will benefit from this, you might ask? Well, it's great news for older racers, those who own vintage watercraft, and those who love the thrill of no-holds-barred modified racing.
According to PM Sports Marketing's Patrick Mell, the interest in bringing back modified classes has been growing among racers in recent years. The new classes include Amateur Ski, 650 Ski, and 550 Ski Modified, Masters Ski Superstock, Amateur Runabout 1200, 800, and 660 Modified, and Amateur Sport Modified. This means that riders who already have the resources to build modified watercraft or those who want to get involved in an affordable way can sign up directly for the championships. The IJSBA is not requiring interested racers to qualify for the new classes. So, dust off that 550 you have in the garage, and get ready for an adrenaline-pumping ride at the championships. This announcement is sure to make old-time racers happy and attract new racers to the sport. Don't miss out on the action! Kawasaki will be presenting the national series and most of the events will be held along the California coast (Ventura, Oceanside, and Encinitas) for four consecutive weeks in May. However, the final two rounds will take place in Laughlin, NV to coincide with Formula One powerboat racing and the Laughlin River Days festival. The new Freeride category will replace Freestyle at the first six ocean events, with Pro Freestyle only appearing during the final two rounds of competition in Laughlin. While the total number of rounds remains at eight, there will only be four weekends of competition, with each day counting as a separate round. The Freeride champions will be crowned after Round 6, with the events of Rounds 7 and 8 determining the Pro Freestyle winner.
Executive Director Kirk Holland of the IJSBA explained that the surf-oriented sites create a spectacular and colorful venue for professional watercraft racers to showcase their talents. Holland compared personal watercraft racing to sports like supercross and snocross, stating that they offer exciting, high-flying action. The tour will be televised by The Speed Channel. Those interested in the 2002 Pro Watercross Tour can contact tour promoter FreeSpace Media Group or the International Jet Sports Boating Association for more information. The 2002 Pro Watercraft Tour Schedule is as follows: Round 1 & 2: May 3-4, San Buenaventura, Ventura, California (IJSBA Pro Ski/Pro Runabout 1200, FWA Pro Ski Freeride/Pro Runabout Freeride) Round 3 & 4: May 10-11, Oceanside Pier, Oceanside, California (IJSBA Pro Ski/Pro Runabout 1200, FWA Pro Ski Freeride/Pro Runabout Freeride) Round 5 & 6: May 17-18, Moonlight Beach, Encinitas, California (IJSBA Pro Ski/Pro Runabout 1200, FWA Pro Ski Freeride/Pro Runabout Freeride) Round 7 & 8: May 31-June 1, Laughlin Bridge, Laughlin, Nevada (IJSBA Pro Ski/Pro Runabout 1200/Pro Freestyle) |
